We, like wells, gave freely.

Like wells, deep and pure,

gave unmeasured - gave all.


We, like wells, gave all - went dry

and they, cursing us, left

and took the pail.


We, like wells, lay waiting.

Like wells, barren and dry,

watched the pregnant skies.


We, like wells, holes gaping,

heard dark skies break and drop -

returning what was ours.
